The rapid transition to idle is part of the problem, a slowly decreasing idle is more reliable with weak mixtures. In the old days when you could see what car emissions really were (pre cat) at idle speed the co level would be at about 1.5 or 2, raising the speed to 2000 or so made it run much cleaner, below 0.5 or so. Idle needs a richer mixture for stability, which higher speed negates the need for.

Why Fords, particularly fiesta are so bad I don't know, there are some faults that aggravate it a bit, but basically it is a feature rather than a fault. The higher speed is turned on by the ecu, so isn't easily disabled. One way would be to let it warm up and then have a switch in the circuit to the IACV which you could turn off when it was idling nice and steadily, repeat each time from cold would put people off though.

Why? It only happens when the ECU detects the clutch pedal is depressed.

What were the emissions like?

Oh, and I had an '83 Fiesta from new, and it ran like a bag of s*it compared to anything with an ECU.

The Daewoo Lanos also suffer a common fault with high tick over. There's a software bug fix but the cheap method is: ign on, disconnect iscv, ign off - repeat 2 or 3 times and start up holding it on the throttle for a few mins until it re-learns the correct idle. Lasts a few months and just repeat when it goes again.

If you can't see why, I guess you don't drive much.

do you put the clutch down when braking? Most people don't and it is definitely not recommended.

Yes when I change down a gear to one suitable for the speed.

How does he know? Is he assuming that it does that because the revs rise when the clutch is depressed?

Because that's how many Fords of the last decade or more have been programmed to behave. It's actually a feature, not a fault. It's just that on early Fiestas it wasn't implemented terribly well.

Many cars have a similar feature , just not as revvy

Certainly every petrol Focus I've driven does it, as well as the Fiestas, so perhaps your experience is limited in that direction?

My Fiesta DROPS its revs when the clutch is pressed, not the other way round! it's designed to make gear changes smoother for lead-right-footed folks isn't it?
