Yep.

Not really a good thing for the rest of us unless you are in the trade of making up dodgy number plates,just more hassle as it do harder to drive a car without the correct documents of cloned plates. As it's quite clear that cloning plates will remain a hell of a lot cheaper than any of the documents other than the MOT what do you think will be the chosen option spending hundreds on tax and insurance or a few quid on a set of plates. A real pain if it's your plaits they copy.

So to avoid this, you're suggesting what?

Oh, *plates*. Right. In that case, you could make sure the plates on your car actually belong to somebody else - then it won't be your car that gets cloned.

Alternatively, you could get on with life.

Unless the MOT station came to you, how did you get the car to the garage for its MOT ?

Whilst it may be perfectly OK to drive the car to the garage without VEL or MOT for a pre-booked appointment, the car still has to be insured. And driving the car without insurance will incur greater wrath than no MOT and tax combined.

Apparently there is such a case depending when the vehicle was last taxed. My Land Rover's last taxed expired in '95 (has not been used on the road since). When SORN first started, it only applied to vehicles with a tax disk on 1st Jan '96.

I have repeatedly rung the DVLA to clarify whether it should be SORNed, they have always told me it doesn't need to be, although they don't seem to be able to find the registration on their computer. The last time I looked at a SORN form it did not appear to cater for vehicles in a similar position to my Land Rover (not taxed or SORNed from memory).

If anybody knows for sure any different please let me know.

Anybody that is the registered keeper for a UK registered car MUST have a permanent UK address. It's about the only formal requirement for being a registered keeper.

Mind you, most of the pikeys we get round here are on Oirish plates.
