It is an electric compressor, so it works with engine off, for a while, then as the battery gets lower then the computer knows to start the engine to re-charge the battery.

AFAIK the heating comes from the engine coolant side, so will need the engine to run if the coolant is cold. If the coolant is hot then the electric coolant pump will run, either way, everything needs electric power which needs recharging. Wait till you are under the bonnet when it decides to start, unnerving to say the least.

No idea about the latest set up for the power display, older hybrids went to that display automatically, later ones don't, and I couldn't be arsed to try and find it!

On the later prius it is 'info' 'fuel consumption' to get the power display

I also noticed that it has two reservoirs holding pink coolant fluid, both with warnings about high-pressure when hot. The smaller one seems to be connected to the inverter unit next to the engine. I guess that gets hot and is liquid cooled (or even warmed in cold weather) ?.

Probably inverter cooling. they also have a thermos flask to keep engine coolant hot for as long as possible.
