Nissan Almera Cam-Chain

It is listed as a 3.9 hour job, the sump comes off, front head bolts out. I agree, it looks like a horrible job.

so that's £300 before I even get the parts paid for!

Lets hope the NEW camchain lasts more than 43,000 miles.

There was a recall or work-under-warranty job on these where the tensioners were duff and allowed the chain to flap and stretch.

Other than that, they require regular fresh oil 6 monthly. By the mileage on your car, it could have spent all its life popping to the shops and back??

That's a stupidly short life for a camchain in a car. Serviced regularly is it? I've known bikes to go a lot longer on a camchain.

This was apparently done, but it's showing all the symptoms of a streched cam-chain. I'm not paying the cost of a new engine to have this one fixed, I'll have it replaced with a recon diesel instead.

I trust Diesel! This Petrol stuff is way too complex for me.

Yeah, until I bought it and put 5000 miles on it in three months.

It has had regular 5w40 every six months though, and he previous owner was my father-in-law, so I know it's been treated properly.

I've just had an estimate for the job with a Nissan garage and they say £700 - £750. Maybe more depending what they find when its stripped down (may need new tensioners and sprockets etc). Apparently, its British made chains which are affected but nissan won't admit theres a problem so loads of people are having to fork out for the new chains. Google it and you'll come up with loads of info.

Nissan are being very very tight with warranty claims at the moment; mainly due to the poor build quality of the Renault sourced components. You can google that too!

I'm lucky... it's the tensioner, which HASN'T been replaced under warranty, so it will be. I have to pay £130 for a service...

Cam chain nissans are a joke. Some Micra's were fitted with sub standard batch of chains.....

BMW's and Saabs I've had do 200K+ on the original chain - infact they're designed to last the life of the car....I've certainly never had to change one.

Why don't they use nice cheap belts for the job :-)

I have a mate who's Saab threw a chain and wrecked the engine (it was cheaper to fit a secondhand unit than repair) at just over 100,000 fully documented miles. And the specialist who fitted the replacent said it wasn't unusual. Perhaps the Triumph ancestry...

I was always told plenty of good quality oil and If its lots of low mileage trips then thenge oil every 6months?

Older Nissan cam chains lasted a lot longer than that. It was a rare event for a regularly oil changed 90's Primera to wear out or break a chain. It's only since Renault production methods have taken over that there's been any problems.
