Noisy PAS pump on Rover 214S?

Hi all,

Step daughter popped in today with her 97 214S and as we were seeing her off I was reminded of the 'funny noise' she mentioned a while back.

It's a fairly loud 'whirr' [1] that starts from cold and gets louder when you put some load on the steering and varies with the engine revs (I stuck my head under the bonnet and the noise sounded very much like it was coming from what I believe to be the PAS pump (just behind the o/s end of the engine, if that helps pinpoint a particular model).

Apparently she says it's been doing it for over a year and doesn't seem to affect anything (yet). ;-(

The PAS fluid is low at just around the lower level but both flow and return seem covered.

Is this a 'known symptom' please and if so what is it typically a symptom of? Are there any things I could check / look for to help pin it down?

Would it be easy to replace the pump if I had a known good one (breakers / eBay / refurb) and would I need any special tools?

Cheers, T i m

[1] The noise is similar to what you might hear if you held the edge of a credit card against the cam belt pulley teeth.
