Pulled up at a set of lights nice and gently and proceeded to wait. I wasn't in an hurry and I was driving my 11 year old Escory 1400.Another Escort arrived next to me. This thing is Max Powered to the hilt, body lowered and enough LEDs to ligh up my christmas tree.He proceeded to rev the knackers off what passed for a vehicle, obviously riding the clutch a bit since it kept jumping forwards a couple of inches.As the lights changed, I pulled away fairly gently wanting to not be anywhere near the speed demon if he got anything wrong ahead of me...and speed machine revved like a demon and floored it hard. In the rain.Once I got to 50mph (the limit on that stretch). I stopped accelerating gently. 15 seconds later he passed me at about 80.As he went past, I noticed that, the side of the car was emblazoned with a list of power-ups you can fit, the tops of the wheels rims were obscured by the body it was so low, that the exhaust was bigger than a pint glass and that the Cosworth sticker was crooked.The registration was V. something. Ok, so he lost a lot of time by not knowing how to drive and making his wheels go round quickly instead of making the car go fast, but how much does it cost to make a car go slower than a 6 year older version of same car by *that* much. I haven't a clue what model he had, but you can't get much lower than mine.As he went through the roundabout ahead of us, I was glad he wasn't alongside me. He floored it through and had stupid amounts of understeer at a slow enough speed that I almost caught up with him. It isn't a particularly fast roundabout so I slowed to 40mph and *did* catch him up.How do you ruin a car *that* badly and still get it through the MOT?

Get away! Was it? Did you lighten it?

I was erring on the side of caution, and pitching it close to the Mk2 Scirocco. Various sources on the net quote different figures...

1852lbs 842kg for the Mk1 1.6 2072lbs 941kg for the Mk2 1.8 8v or 961kg for the 16v!

My missus has an 8v Mk2 Gti - looking back I didn't really like it as it felt too cumbersome. A lot of that could've been FWD combined with fat tyres and no PAS.

mine was an '85, LHD, no sunroof, no 'lecky windows or central locking, no power steering.

Came up as 875 kg on the weighbridge in Liverpool Freeport.

That was with 1/4 tank of fuel, and no-one in it.

Nearly as light as my 720kg citroen axgt ... with 128bhp @ 8250rpm. . (Sooner have a mk1 golf though).

The car probably isn't ruined, just driven by an utter plonker. Lots of these hatchbacks, especially Corsas, are low-spec cars with body kits. They're driven by young drivers who can't afford to insure anything with a decent engine.

Same story for me, with a tarted-up Corsa (I hate those things!) pulling up next to my 14-year-old Saab 9000 auto. Lights changed, bye-bye Corsa. Without trying. Usually they also pass me when, like you, I ease off at the speed limit, which sadly they haven't learned to respect.
