Oil Filter Quality

It is the time of year (nearly) when I change the oil in the Smart Car and the Son-in-Law joins me to use the garage to do the same in the CRV ( which was mine).

I offered to pick up the oil and filters from Halfords etc as I get discount via a (retired) staff scheme and have some stock items sitting in the garage etc.

Looking at the CRV filters, they offer several made by Bosch, Mann etc. The prices vary significantly.

I?ve always assumed Halfords sell quality spares - I?ve used their synthetic oil for years and other items. True I used to buy my filters on line from a specialist in Japanese cars who seems to have stopped trading but only because Halfords didn?t stock all the ones I needed at the time (we used to have 3 Japanese/Korean Cars).

Are Mann Oil an Air filters as good as Bosch?

Halfords now have a deal with EuroCarParts and don't carry any stock.

Mann are a name and are specialists in filtration, I would avoid no-name filters like Crossland (yes, it was once a name).

For the quantities and price involved for you, just get genuine honda and mercedes filters, although mann and bosch are both good quality makes, saving a fiver doesn't seem worth it .

I suspect you can get genuine filters at better prices than most of us.

I used to use Honda filters, my stock ran out last year (I used to buy them on line but the supplier is no more) and there isn't a Honda place to hand. Smart use Bosch and I have one 'in Stock', I ordered a few on line last year.

Mann are OE for several manufacturers and pretty much as good as Bosch.

Buy a BMW / Mini air or pollen filter from a dealer and although it will be supplied a in marque branded, hologrammed, part numbered and sealed box the filter itself will almost always be marked with a Mann part number and carry a Mann logo, the manufacturers part number is not always on the filter itself.

The dealer supplied oil filters are sourced from elsewhere though, they are certainly not Bosch, they may possibly be French but from what manufacturer I do not know.

For instance this is what a dealer supplied filter looks like

Quite distinctive with the zigzags and white paper.

Those from Mann, Bosch and just about everyone else look like this

Strangely you can get unbranded knockoffs from the far east that look identical to the dealer part

I'd be surprised if a car maker stuck to only one maker of consumables like oil filters at all times.

When Unipart was the BL parts supplier, you'd often see slightly different designs with the same part number.

There was a time when FRAM used to be the supplier to most of the UK car market and it still exists.

Their online website seems to show three types of filter for a CR-V, depending on usage.

Thank you.

That is getting a bit complicated- the vehicle is used domestically by my son-in-Law, previously by myself. I doubt he does 5k miles a year. I didn?t average much more in the 11 years or so I had it.

I ordered and have collected a Bosch one plus an air filter (I think a Crossland). The local Halfords got them in the same day and I had a discount voucher.

MIL used to work on the assembly line of a filter manufacturer and said that they all went out in different manufacturers boxes. ;-)

That's not to say they didn't use different spec materials of course, however ...
