[OT] Huyundai Getz

Well, Off-topic-ish As the members of UK-RCM have knowledge that is infinite and most impressive, I don't suppose anyone has any horror-stories on the Hyundai Getz? I know the depreciation price after a year is usually read out by Christopher Lee by flickering candlelight, but it goes well[1] and has a warranty that implies that it'll never be needed. However, what's dropped off recent cars?

[1] That's the 1.3. Yes, I know it's not exactly full of beans, but I've not seen a car with such a willing engine - and I've driven most things from a Chevette to a 911 Turbo. I might add that I was unimpressed by the 911 - I like low/medium torque and that had naff all.

I had the unfortunate experience of having one of those little Getz thrust upon me by a car hire company at Malta Airport.

Anyone thinking of actually buying should give it some serious thought. There is more thrust emitted with a WET FART.

Uh-oh. Was that the 1.1, per chance? I tried that and I think the starter motor had more power...

Oops. Looks like I must've missed something on the 1/2 hour test drive - Okay, it's not exactly pant-wettingly fast[1]. But, for a 1.3, it's not bad at all. FWIW it's the best *new* car I've driven in its price.

[1] I'd like to enter this sentence as a contender for understatement of the year.

rubbish snipped.

Since you cannot even spell the name of the vehicle correctly, anything else you say is suspect.

A colleague had a Hyundai Accent Coupe[1] with the 1.3 engine. Seemed perfectly adequate for lugging the upturned bathtub body about and, allowing for this guy's complete lack of mechanical sympathy and inability to use a clutch smoothly, never suffered any problems in, IIRC, the 70k miles he had it.

This car's recently caught my attention too. When I get my next car I'm going to consider one. I believe the 1.3 does 0-60 in under 11s, which would be equivelent to something like a 1.6 in a bigger car. The 1.1 takes just over 15s which would feel slow.

You get a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, 3 years free servicing and 3 year break down cover. I've never driven one, but it'll probably make a good city car.

Hi Kevin

There's an interesting idea for a tuning thread...

What would i have to eat to increase my BHP in this department, bearing in mind I'm already comparable to a supercharged V16 running on methanol!!

Actually, I thought it was a valid question. This is the point where I would normally insert flames of varying heat, but I'm in a good mood, so I'll let you come up with your own.

If you'll look at a standard QWERTY keyboard, you'll find that the 'u' is next to the 'y'. This gives quite a valid example of defective-finger syndrome. It's quite a common disease throughout Usenet. However, it's not what caused the minor typo in the subject line (now corrected). You see, my keyboard was recently abducted by aliens and they performed quite a range on tests upon it. Unfortunately, before they returned they keyboard, they didn't quite assemble the keys in the correct order. This is why I have had a slight problem in correctly typing the name of a car manufacturer.

It's worth a test drive at least. I don't believe that under real-world conditions you can get a 0-60 in under 11s, though, without reducing the clutch to a quivering pile of molten metal. Then again, are you after something that can do 0-60 in 10s and *still* looking at a Getz or are you after something that isn't dog slow, doesn't handle like an eel on ice(Tiff Needell drove it round a track and liked it so that must count), is reasonably comfortable and isn't likely to grind to a halt after a couple of years?

The warranty is the selling point, I think. I've read the small-print and it still seems okay. When I test drove it I had a mix of town, twisty and motorway - it's good at the town and twisty[1] on the motorway it's still not bad - the only downside is a bit more wind noise than I'd like.

[1] For it's class - before anyone complains!

As the shepherd said, I never noticed the extra U.

It was me that mentioned the 0-60 time but I think that was for the

1.6, not the 1.3. I think the 1.3 is still reasonable though.

And the award for pun of the weak goes to... ;-) You also failed to notice the other deliberately-inserted fupucks[1] that were placed in there to trip up the unwary. Now, as a special treat for those who think I spout only rubbish, I'd like to wave this statement: I believe Slick50 is an excellent product........... ............... ........ ..... .... ...I've never found a product that stops my pet snakes from getting friction-burns when sliding about their tank, until now. It is indeed the best snake-oil I've tried...I'll get me coat.
