ROT: Kids musical knowledge

One of the benefits of having an interactive whiteboard in my form room is that I can play mp3 through it, with the lights off and full visualistions on. Left it playing during lunch today, and my form came in while I had the full version of The Wall playing. Struck a chord with over half of them: cue 12 minutes of silence, followed by comments of "Wow, what a piece of music" My form are Year 10 students (aged 14-15), who are just discovering rebellion. Rest of the teachers in the rooms around me thought it hilarious. Next door is my father, who plays Phantom of the Opera and folk, and the woman the other side plays a variety of music from 70's to 90's.

We have had some fun with form names as they take on the form tutors surname initial, my dad has a year 11 form, and they are known as Cyclops Cubed (11I), while some, now they know what my other vehicle is, find my tutor group name appropriate: 10I. Still causes me hours of mirth when I think about it!

If you work with your old man, exactly how old are you then?

What annoys me most about my groups is that they claim it as their own and all new !!! Still at least they appreciate good music :-))

My Kids are eight and they listen to, among others Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and any old rock 'classics' which is fine by me as I grew up with that musical era - I'm 39. This is due to them taking music lessons in Drums, Guitar and Piano and having really good teachers. They appreciate the effort put into the music. They also like the modern proper bands like Coldplay, GreenDay and Muse who I'm quite partial to at the moment..

All three of my lot have blagged, Dire Straits, Floyd, the Police Santana, Phil Keaggy, et al. for ipods. Have some difficulty tracking down 'my' CDs these days.

Did anyone see the Cream concert on BBC2 Ginger Baker is 67 this year! I think it was a 10 minute drum solo last night - superb (well they all were, really!).

I think rock/blues music does a lot to bridge the generation gap.

Simonm.

Oh no!!!! Missed that, damn and bugger. I have recently dug out the Wheels of Fire double album and have been playing Toad (live at the Fillmore) all week on the way to work*. Competition from the doompa-doompa coming from the lowered Corsa in the next lane - no contest!

What programme was it? Will it be on again, or might it be on the net somewhere?

Miknd you, Baker always looked 67, even when he was 27. My Dad reckoned it was all that marry-whatsit he was smoking.

*From the same gig - Crossroads is the best rock guitar track ever in the history of the universe in space, IMO. Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even 30-odd years later.

Went to a Procul Harem concert in Hull in the late 70's ( good old Uni days ), drummer did a 25 minute solo non stop and went through 3 sets of sticks. Never seen anything like it since. Mind you I walked home all the way to Cottingham ( 4 miles or so ) completely deaf. In the end all I wanted to do was turn the key in my lock.

Reminds me of when the Shrek movie came out and all the really young (I mean under 10) kids were singing I'm a believer. I knew the words too, but that's from the first time round! That made me feel old!

Have you seen those adverts for Jameson's? Just who are the guys they have playing the drums and the harp. And what is that music the harpist is playing?

S.I.:

reminds me of a comment made by a taxi-driving friend of mine who had Abba playing in his cab while taking some kids to school.

"What's this music, drive?" (they're from brum...)

"'s Abba, innit."

"who're they?"

"well, they were a pretty successful group in the 70s and 80s."

"Were they as big as the Beatles, then?"

"Well, I dunno. pretty nearly. Here, how come you know about the Beatles, but not about Abba?"

"Ah, we learned about the Beatles in history".

Powell (Rainbow) - Dance with the Devil.Dunno who the guy is... I cried for a week when Marc Bolan died ... takes me back a bit. Tyrannosaurus Rex in Birmingham Town Hall was the first live gig I ever went to. I still have all the original Tyrannosaurus Rex (not T-Rex) albums, all on vinyl and most on CD.

I feel old ....

Maybe I should actually watch this film as we have a copy. I always manage to be out of the room when my daughter watches it. Sounds like I might actually enjoy the music if it's from my childhood!
