My son is thinking of buying a 1993 5 door 306 XND with 110K on the clock for £500 from a car mechanic mate. The car starts first time, doesn't look to bad and drives OK. What sort of things should he check out on the car? What are the major cost items for repair?

David

Not much. The engine will last pretty much forever provided it has had, and you keep it in regular oil/filter changes and don't snap the cam belt by leaving it on there too long.
Make sure the cooling system is in order, as if it lets go you're almost garunteed to warp the head and knacker the gasket.
Suspension bushes wear and can cause funny handling problems, but if any of them are far gone you *will* be able to tell.
I think they are pretty well rust proofed so if it's rusty, its been crashed and will probably continue to rust which is bad news.
If it starts fine that means that the glow plugs are OK, they don't fail all that often (~80k intervals ish) and when one goes, don't be a pikey, have them all replaced with good quality (expensive) replacements as the others will follow soon.
My family has had a few 306s with varying degrees of dieselness, 1.9D
1.9Dturbo and 2.0HDi and they have all been cheap to run, very reliable and actually not bad to drive, even if the 1.9D is a bit slow to accelerate, it can keep up good speed and be nice and economical.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Douglas and thanks. I went and had a look at the car with my son at the weekend and I was quite impressed at the condition and lack of obvious rust on the car. Although we didn't drive it (no MOT/tax) the car again started first time from cold without smoke. His mate will stick it up on the ramps this week for us to have a better look underneath, but from what I've seen so far I don't think he'll get a better one for the money. What sort of mileage should he expect from it?

Well I crashed my 1.7D engined (basically the same engine as 1.9D) 205 with a paltry 195,000 miles on it. It was still going strong, had had its oil changed almost religiouly at 6000 mile intervals, and apart from normal things wearing out like several sets of brakes and tyres, 2 radiators and 1 set of glow plugs had no problems and had never left anyone stranded. It pulled 50mpg at worst if I caned it round town, I never really worked out the mpg on a long run.
My Mother's 1997 R 1.9D 306 has something approaching 140,000 miles and has had no problems apart from my sisters reversing it into things and bending panels. The brakes can be a pain in the arse as when they need replaced, nobody ever knows for sure what model of calipers/rear cylinders are on it untill they pull it to bits, but the bits are always readily available. Fuel economy wise I think it's not as good as a 205 but My mother could report 450-500 miles from a tankful of diesel. It does the 140 mile trip from my house to my parents at a pretty constant
75-80 on pretty much exactly £10 of diesel, which I've just worked out to be about 53mpg.

Thanks Douglas, for the information. He plans on using it for his work to get to and from jobs which could be several hundred miles in a day. He can't really afford much more as he has just started a new job, but needs something reliable which will get him from A to B. Your mileages would suggest that he could get a couple more years out of the existing engine, or even more. That would be brill.
thanks again,
David
