Hi, again :-))
I'm sorry to be posting again but, I swapped news feeds only to find I couldn't upload my replies. Now, having changed back, I have lost all previous correspondence. Non the less, I want to thank those who did reply.
Back to the beginning. My 96 XL came to a stop on a slight incline. Half an hour later it wouldn't start on the key, but it did start on bumping in reverse. Which got me home 250 yards before it began to show a slight 'stutter'.
A week later: Assuming it was low on fuel I put a gallon in and jumped in and it started full strength and after ten seconds running I was happy and switched off. Midnight that night I tried it again, and nothing. It seemed like it wanted to start?
Today, two days later, I tried and it started, but it was making a meal of it. After 5 secs it stopped. Trying the key again it seemed like it was going to fire up, but never did.
The fuel pump will start and stop on the key, as expressed in the Haynes manual, though I can't hear the supposed petrol return trickle(?).
Anyhow, no way am I gonna pay the average price of £150 for a diagnostics test! If I get it going I will report back. Otherwise I'll let you know how far down the road I kick it before my leg disintegrates.
...Ray.
