Another example: a Mk2 Polo SWMBO had was about 750kg IIRG. A current Polo will be at least 1000.

Quite true. The 1.8 was listed as 90 bhp.
Mine has that :)
And easily that heh.
They soon learnt that bhp alone was a big mistake when they did the
12bhp learner bike law. Gotta be power/weight ratio too. BHP to limit top speed, power/weight to limit how quick you get to speed.
i had a 2 litre carb sierra, even with only 108bhp it managed 0-60 in 9.5 and 116mph...about the same as a 2.0 focus with 135bhp...
I only asked about the Skodia Farbia VRS!!! Seems I have opened up a right can of worms! LOL, still, it's been informative! Many thanks to those who answered my query, guess I will just have to test drive one and try it for myself maybe get it "chipped" to 170 bhp! cheers

Not so sure myself. Torque is nice, but its lazy driving style. My car (turbocharged 2 litre) has roughly the same power and torque as my fathers
3.5 litre straight 6. Mine comes in at 2.5Krpm in a kick. Sure you can dump your foot in his and off it goes, where as I have to change gear from cruise or I have lag, but I have no problems covering ground or keeping up with him, without needing to go past 4.5krpm (peak power at 6000, peak torque at 3400 for mine). I wouldnt call 4500 revving, its barely breaking a sweat.
But no matter what, it's still a Skoda :-)
