radio reception

i have a v reg polo and when i first got it i put a goodmans cd player in it, it works fine apart from the fact that i can only get fm on the radio. Is there any reason why i can't get mw etc.

Any help would be appreciated

You wired it up to the aerial 4 times?

With four people all having the same problem I guess it must be fairly common, try searching google for it.

Hi Chris, now we've got all the smartarse answers out of the way, I think I can pinpoint your problem to your ariel. FM reception will be easily obtained with the weakest signal but AM needs a fairly good signal strength. Check for the following:- Good earth contact between ariel base and wing (or whatever part of your car ariel is mounted on). Good connections on your ariel lead- check no loose strands of wire or screening braid making contact with something they shouldn't. Rule of thumb for checking ariel- turn radio on (preferably tuned to a fairly weak AM station), go outside of car and without touching car body, grip ariel mast with your fingers. If reception improves, the ariel is your problem. If you've already checked the two items above I would suggest ariel replacement is needed. Make very sure you clean up the underside of the arial hole before you fit the new one- scrape down to bare metal if possible.

I think that your facts are somewhat wrong regarding FM & AM reception. It's FM which requires a strong signal and relies on line of sight from the transmitter - haven't you noticed the need to retune when travelling long distances? (although my Panasonic does this automatically). For example, you couldn't possibly receive an FM station from London in the north of England, but it is possible to receive AM worldwide, especially at night, when AM signals can reflect off the ionosphere. Didn't you ever make a crystal set? I accept your points regarding the aerial checks, but if Chris can receive FM, it suggests that the fault is in the CD/radio unit. However, I still can't understand why anybody would want to listen to AM radio - the quality is hideous.

Modern VWs use an amplified antenna. The original head unit would have had the amplifier built in, but now you've got rid of that.

No need to modify. It will work for all head units other than OEM.

Depends on many things. The length of aerial needed for VHF is much less than for MF, so it's possible a broken one will work on one but not the other. It also depends on the relative strengths of the signals you're trying to receive.
