This is common problem with electric aerials when they been used for a long time. The min problem is a collar down at the bottom of the mast tube. It's different metal to the mast and the two metals react with each other over time and seize up. You may be able to free it off by squirting WD40 down the side of the mast where it disappears into the wing - but the results won't last long. You really need to replace the mast and you should be able to buy just the mast itself for less than £20 from your main dealer. Make sure you get the correct replacement. Some hve chrome buttons t the top and others have black buttons. Fitting instructions should be included. If it's similar to my Carlton then it's fairly easy but needs someone to turn the radio on nd off.

Both my current and previous 600 did this and I've seen many of other the same. WD40 every so often should sort it out.
Trouble with WD40 or similar is that dust sticks to it and will make it stick again sooner than simply cleaning it. Unless it's damaged, it should slide freely when clean.
That would be better, but like I say a clean undamaged one will telescope easily.
