Rear wheel bearing

As several of you will be aware, I've been working on the rear brakes on my Peugeot 205 (1992 1.4GR) the last few days, specifically, renewing two corroded brake pipes and replacing the handbrake cables.

Whilst taking off and replacing the near-side whel hub, to my horror, part of the wheel bearing came apart and lodged itself on the stub axle. I managed to remove it and 'rebuild' it on the bench, but will I inevitably have to replace the bearing, simply because it came apart ?

Also, why did it come apart ?

It very common for the inner bearing to stay on the stub when you remove the drum, as long as you have not damaged it getting it off the stub then there is no reason not to reuse it. Just be careful about dirt and rebuild it in the hub and refit, when you have tightened every thing up and replaced the road [1] wheel listen for noise and check for play.

[1] It is far easier to check for play and noise with the wheel on ( Handbrake off and car still jacked) as the extra leverage and inertia of the wheel helps.

So long as you've not got any dirt in it it'll be fine. Clean & regrease it if worried

They do that, there's nothing holding it together once you've undone the hubnut. reassembley instructions are in the Haynes BOL.
