Gearbox problem

it is an 8.2 hour job to remove, dismantle and rebuild the box, plus the parts. so allow a couple of hundred in bits and 500 - 1000 labour

best bet would be to find somewhere that does second-hand guaranteed imported gearboxes and fitting, or find one yourself from a breaker, or do as many dealers do and buy a complete car as a spares kit and flog the rest.

or just put it in as a part ex and give someone else the problem

It might well be an expensive internal fault with something like the gear selector forks but it could also be simple things. Worn gearbox/engine mounts allowing the box to move about, worn or broken detente springs in the gearlever mechanism failing to hold the lever in position, an adjustment problem with the gearlinkage or even something as stupid as the gearlever gaitor which covers the hole round the gear lever fouling the lever. Not exactly common that latter one but not unknown on MGB's.

If you just take it to a "gearbox specialist" or main dealer you'll get charged for a new gearbox (and probably the clutch as well) and I doubt you'll see much change from a grand. A real expert and an honest one to boot, no idea where you'd find one though, might just cure it for a few quid. Good luck.

Indeed. I once used a firm in the vicinity of a large sports stadium with a TW post code. The engine (Zetec) was never well afterwards. Oddly the outfit underwent a few name changes during my short experiences of them and they appeared to have lost their credit card facilities regularly too.
