Renaoult Laguna Hub

Hi All

Says in Haynes to replace hub nut with new one when refitting hub

I need to remove this to check rear brake linings/wheel cylinder as brake drum is held on by hub nut

I think that the rear wheel cylinder is leaking so I assume that I would need to replace the brake shoes or can I put thinners on them and burn off any contamination?

I then need to put it back together and the car will need to be used while I get the bits

Do I really need to replace the nut with a new one each time?

Renault say that it is recommended

The torque setting is 140 ft lbs

I know that brakes need to be right but money is a bit tight this month.

I have found that Renault prices are more than double local accessory shop for the shoes

I intend of course to replace the wheel cylinder as well if that is the problem.

The leak must be fixed, the shoes may be cleaned and may be all right (note the maybes) You have little to lose by retrying the shoes, obviously take it easy and try them out, if the handbrake will lock up the rear wheels then the shoes are probably ok.

IME very few people replace the hub nut after removal.

Mostly I find that the lower cost of pattern parts is because they are rubbish, frequently the car shops supply the wrong bits or there are minor differences in size or positioning of spring holes or sometimes they fit if you grind a bit off. Unless the price is absolutely prohibitive then I would recommend genuine parts, as a second resort get the bits from GSF Euro parts, they are usually extremely good quality or genuine with a different mark on.
