Hi my 115 diesel battery charge light came on faintly the other day and the battery consequently died. It's probably the alternator but does any body know the best way to check whether its the alternator itself or the diode pack.
the alternator is a bitch to get to so any advice more than welcome

Give the whole alternator to a reconditioners. You can look at the output with an oscilloscope, or dismantle the alternator & check the diodes individually with a test lamp but it's probably not worth the effort.
