Rover 216S clunking on corners / potholes. Help!

Hi,

I've got a 1989 G-reg Rover 216S (old shape). It's been suffering recently from a clunking sound when going round right hand corners and over the regulation London potholes. It's a multiple "clunk" i.e. it does it several times in a row. Doesn't happen at all on straight roads. Feels as though it's coming from the front suspension / steering.

Are there any known problems with these models at all which could lead to this?

I'd rather know what I'm in for before I take it down to a garage. I'll fix it myself if it's nothing major or easily diagnosable.

Just fixed the bloody headlight after someone drove into the front of it and replaced a window after some thieving immigrant smashed it. Beginning to think this car is doomed.

Cheers,

G was the change over year by old type do you mean 1st (3 box saloon ) or 2nd generation (hatchback) with the later check the rear suspension void pivot bush. On both types on the front check the anti-rollbar links and ball joints.

It could also be a front spring or strut problem.

Wheel bearings make a grinding/rumbling noise, not a knock.

Chewie mumbled:

Usually a droning noise to start with.
