Is this the SPI and have u recently disconnected the battery???
tim..
Ok this only applies to the Lucas Spi which forgets all its mixture / idle settings when the battery is disconnected. However the engine should still start and run, albeit poorly as the mixture generally defaults way too rich. You need first to establish why it won't continue running- is it lack or excess fuel or spark related. Sounds possibly to me like the fuel pump isnt continuing running after cranking the engine.

Simple one ---- the oil presure switch is knackered or the wrong type on some early 90s Rovers it is wired through the fuel pump relay.
Be sure to get the correct type it is a "normmally off" type -- eg connection is only made when the pressure rises -- this is the exactly opposite from almost any other car. This type of switch was fitted to 820, Montego 2 litre injection and the original 1980s 3 box Rover 216 and perhaps a few other models.
The only other possibilties are the fuel pump relay and its wiring , or the imobiliser
Your confuing the issue, this isn't a problem on the an 820i (Lucas Hotwire) not the crap Motorola-Rover single point system fitted to the
820e & 820se
