If it's got a VV carb, then they've got an anti run-on valve somewhere. Check that first.
timing. carb clean, tweak them.
It's called dieseling and it happens (usually) when there is a carbon build-up on the valves and/or pistons which gets hot enough to keep igniting fuel vapours until they run out.
Ford fitted anti-dieseling valves to a lot of their cars years ago because of this problem. You can tell which cars had them because of the loud hiss when the car was turned off - lots of air being admitted to the manifold.
You could check for such a valve, to see if it's working, as Guy says, or give it a Redex-ing if it's a problem.

wire to the auto choke unit, could that be where the anti-run on valve is?think it's the webber 2v card by the way.
