Scrapping a car

A while ago the scrap price was so low and tighter environmental rules increased costs to scrappies so that it could indeed cost to scrap a car. However, things have changed since then. They've mostly paid off the worst of the costs of fixing their drainage etc and the scrap price has risen.

I'd say the garage is trying it on. My local scrappy will take 'em away for you and pay around £30.

With the price of steel going through roof, the Chinese are using it all, there is money in scrap metal. You want a real scrap dealer, not a car breakers, someone thats sign says `ferrous and non -ferrous metals ` rather than `motor spares`.

This sort of place will usually crush the thing while you wait or more likely duck as they throw it across the yard. You will be paid the going rate for mixed metal scrap minus usually around £2 a tyre if you leave them on, disposal tax on tyres.

Last one I scrapped was a diesel AX, heavy engine for its size, left tyres on got , as in, they paid me £16.25 for the hulk and had pleasure of watching the f**ker crushed :-)

DEpends where you are but that was the going rate last year, it seems to have dropped a bit since

Most local councils will take them away free.

Paying to have your car scrapped is a con these days.

If the car can be fixed and retailed and a profit made for a grand total of 325 quid, isn't it worth you having it fixed?

We charge £25 for disposing of cars, covers our costs for running a truck out to collect it, then taking it to the scrap yard.

Not really, since they wanted £400 to fix it. The garage could fix it for next to nothing next time he has a quiet time. Mostly welding, but also needed exhaust and some problem with the rear lights.

My local garage sends all sub-£2000 trade-ins straight to the auction.

A £7500 car takes up as much display-space as a £500 car, and the £7500 one is going to generate a lot more profit/have fewer potential warranty comebacks. These days nobody wants a 12-year-old Sierra/Cavalier for £300 when they can get credit and drive a 3-year-old Mondeo instead.

Depends on the 'Vehicle Re-Cycling Center as far as I've seen recently. If you can't find one to do it at least for free you could offer it to your local Fire Station as a rescue practice vehicle. That's how I got rid of my last one.

Having just had a clearout partly inspired by this thread, just took pile of scrap this very afternoon , old electronics housings old transformers etc,classed as light iron, total of 300Kg not even 1/3rd of tonne , difference between empty and laden van and got £9.60 for it.

If there was less of the myth that it costs to scrap a car there would be less of dangerous hulks littering the place, you must have the reg document to scrap a car but at over £30 a tonne for scrap light iron you`ll get more than your bus fare back

We did that with a Dormobile minibus once. They were ecstatic and invited crews over from other stations to play "Rescue the cripple" 'cos it had a tail-lift.

My local "Car Recycler" wanted £30 to take mine away until I pointed out that I had three to be disposed of. They then very kindly offered to do the job for free. Presumably this was to wipe out the threat of competion, lol.

They do actually sell under £500 type cars - it isn't a dealer's or anything, just a normal mechanic type garage. Looks like it used to be a petrol station, and the aforementioned bangers are on the forecourt.

Why are scrap yard so large and full of scrap - why don't they convert it to cash by selling it on?

Afraid we can't accept them now. We are only allowed to accept cars that have had sump, fuel tank, radiator drained etc as they pose a 'environmental risk' (We never pierce them). Also health and safety oinks say we cant use them. There are the odd brigade here and there that take them, but the majority dont. Makes our training expensive

They do, but it's always worth more as bits than as metal.

Probably took mine because the Fire Station is right next door to a garage. Maybe the garage preps the cars for them. Don't know - just guessing.

This country is getting bloody ridiculous. What the hell ARE you supposed to train on now then? Do you just have to make it up as you go along while some poor sod bleeds to death? "Sorry mate, not actually done a car like this one before".

While I can see the case for the proper disposal of bulk number of vehicles there really ought to be some common sense applied to these things. Though I admit H&S / EA directives and common sense do not usually work together.

I wonder how much oil, anti-freeze and other contaminents get chucked down the nearest drain on a Sunday afternoon. I'd lay odds it is more than the entire Fire Service could generate in a year even if it spilt every drop from every vehicle.

My nephew has one of those little plastic pedal cars. I'd bring that round when he's done with it except I expect H&S would find a problem with that too.

Our local brigade come to us. We usually set them an 'accident' up using a scrap car or two, then along they come to remove the dummies from the wreckage. Great fun!
