Should I decide to scrap a car (it's elderly, and may fail the MOT test), who would take it? Can I just drive it to the scrapyard (for scrap metal), as in days of yore, or is there anyone who'd take something that is probably scrap.

If you take it to a scrap yard now, YOU have to pay them. Gone are the days where you would get scrap value for it. If you have space, best thing you could do is keep the car and sell the parts on ebay. Easily rake in several hundred quid that way.
Not always. The local scrappy gave someone I know 50 quid for his Vectra, and they came to collect. Not sure if that was because it was overall very good other than needing attention to the box (so a quick cheap fix and flog for a breakers), or if it's the going rate for any car nowadays.
I'm not interested in breaking it for spares, myself - the scrap yards I was thinking of turn cars into pieces of scrap which are later melted down.
They seem to be paying for scrap again. Chinese demand has driven the price of steel up.
Have a friend with a huge barn . he buys MOT Failures. Sells on things like trim , glass and lights. Anything else that mightbe needed. Then puts it on trailer and takes it to a scrappy. Think he pays £25 a carcass to get shot of it. He has loads of lights and stuff in his barn and makes 5- 700 a week profit. A real ebay business.
he also completes all paperwork as required.
Actually those days are back. Scrap value has gone up.

Ring 'em first and ask how much they'll give you, once it's there they'll try their best to get it for nowt. Scrap has gone up in value and they're now offering £30-40 quid for a runner local to me..
Look in your local free ads, there's always half a dozen in this area (S/Yorks) that will collect either free or pay you £20.00 or so. :-)

If all else fails, try your local council. Ours will collect the car and arrange disposal. A pal of mine used this service, it cost less than £30 and no hassle.
NO! Scrap prices are high, you should get money for it. Do not pay anyone to take it, they will be laughing all the way to the metal recyclers and back!
Late last year I got £40 for an old Wolseley 16/60, and metal prices have gone up since then.
Up my way the scrappys give you £70 now cos of the trade on ebay that everyone is scrapping their own cars.

Light iron, which is the grade of scrap metal which includes cars, is currently =A350.00/tonne round here. Let me know if you have a BH postcode, I collect free from most of them.=20

£60.00/tonne here, though it can change overnight. The key is to choose a metal recycler and not a salvage yard.
Yes, steel has gone up, so you can again, if you can find a scrappie that didn't shut down during the lean times.
