sealant on threads or not ?

Replacing a petrol fuel filter on a 94 Corolla. The replacement filter came with three new copper washers two for the top and one smaller size which is presumably for the bottom connection, (since there was not one in there, when we took the original filter off ?).

When its all reassembled, it leaks from the bottom connection. Is this because there should not be a washer in there ? or that there should be a washer and we need to buy some kind of sealant to put in on the threads ? Thanks for advice.

you don't need sealant on petrol connections, it would be washed away in any case. any chance of putting up a picture so that it is easier to understand?

This a view from the bottom of the filter. The black ring in the middle inside is not flat, but a bit conical. (ie higher nearer the hole lower nearer the threads on the outside).

I don't think that needs a washer, provided the end of the pipes undamaged it should just seal, check it hasn't acquired a burr where the copper washer was & reassemble it.

that is a conical fitting (like the end of a brake pipe) the end of the pipe that goes in will have a matching 'flare' as long as the two flares are undamaged and clean and the nut does up tight then it should seal fine, definitely no washer needed.

perhaps the spare washer is for another year with a different fitting.

That's a flare fitting and the flare nut just needs tightening.

Is the other side a banjo fitting and requires 2 copper washers either side.

Thanks to all. Its now done and dusted.

The only hitch was all that petrol dropped on to the floor has dissolved some of the rubber sole on my sandals.
