spark plug tightness

Was wondering how tight spark plugs have to be when they go in, never done it before. Just wondering if I can guage it by hand or if I need to buy a torque wrench.

Cheers

depends on the plug design how tight, plugs with a washer (new) wind in by hand only till the washer touches, then turn a further quarter to a half turn (should feel firm)

if they are taper seat plugs with no washer then again wind in by hand till the seat touches then do up a further eighth turn maximum.

it is very rare to see anyone use a torque wrench on plugs, if you have no feel then get and use a torque wrench, the setting for your car will be in the manual for it.

12ft/lb as a rule of thumb which equates to "just nicely nipped up" using a 3/8 ratchet.

15 ft lbs will be about right for most cars.
