I have a 2001 Golf SE 1.6 and it's developed a squeak. It's not noticable when you first start driving but after a while and especially in slow moving traffic, there is an irregular squeak when the car moves, that stops under braking. It seems to come from the rear of the car but the VW service tells me that it's a slight lip on the front discs and they want =A3251 to fix it
- does this sound correct?

It could be just brake dust on the front brakes, I'd be asking what the thickness is of the discs & pads As Front discs should be changed when 19mm & pads 7mm (inc backplate)
£251 seems expensive just for the front brakes when the dealer parts are £100 & quoted repair time is 1.4hrsThey're very easy for any DIY Mechanic to change anyway
The last squeak I had drove me crackers for a while - it turned out to be a "plunger" switch for the alarm on the boot - of course, attempts to track it down by applying pressure to the boot didn't make it squeak...
- does this sound correct?

Take it to a vw specialist garage or you local reputable garage.
I seriously doubt it'll cost that much.
