started my engine while oil was draining now car doesn't start!

errr why did you start it with no engine oil in ? if you ran it for long you might have seized it !

Sounds like it has "seized" due to a lack of oil. IF you are lucky, it may not be damaged- even with the oil drained there would be some left on the friction surfaces.

Fill with oil as normal, remove the spark plugs and see if it will "turn over". If it does, replace the plugs and try again.

until the engine fires and runs you will have the alternator light (battery light) on & any other warning light.

im still curious as to know why you ran it with no engine oil in it !!!

I revved the car because i forgot to warm up the oil and the engine flush.

Even worse. So you knew that engine had almost no oil, yet started up the engine! Perhaps if you had forgot that engine was dry, it could have been excusable...

"A friend of mine" decided that whilst the car was in the air to replace an exhaust box, "he" might as well take the opportunity to do the oil and filter.

All done, "he" leant through the driver's window and started the car to make sure none of the clamps were blowing, and it was only when the friend assisting mentioned the flapping oil filler cap that the light dawned as to the oil level...

Cue much swearing and diving for ignition keys/coil LT connections...

This is a very simple way to wreck an engine, but I have known people do it before!

When I ran a motorcycle shop, a customer told me that after draining the oil he ran the engine till the sound changed, he then knew all the oil was out. I told him what a stupid bastard he was. The only reason he got away with it was because the engine used a roller bearing crank, every production type car engine uses a plain bearing crank which relies on pressurised oil to avoid damage.

ok most, I can only think of oddball things with a ball or roller crank, like vw beetle (maybe mexican ones still in production.)

Actually what mainstream production car has a roller or race type bottom end?

Either way it is damaging.

Anyway if it is a genuine post, then the chances of him/her/it having a roller crank vehicle are exceedingly slim.

I was trying to illustrate the point that people are stupid enough to do that sort of thing, and I have met one! It was the same person that told me (on another occasion) that I and the other guy that ran the shop were sarcastic and rude, a few days later he came in and asked for a battery, I answered "f@@@ off" He stood there flabbergasted and asked again, I repeated my answer and pointed out that he had been rude a few days before, he then took a swing at me !! I chased him away with a fork leg and never saw him again!!

You see em on some cable TV (maybe sat too) with a some Yank V8 hoisted in the air running with the sump off while they wash it's guts with a hose. They are advertising some oil additive.

That's OK. You've learned a valuable lesson. Downside is it'll cost you a couple of thousand quid to rectify depending on the car.

I'm trying really hard to think of one. However, he's not alone in his stupidity - I've seen/heard of others doing it. Expensive lesson.
