Car is 1996 VW Passat TDI, and done 154,000 miles.
Every now and then there is a high-pitched whine for about a second or so just after starting.
The car always starts ok, but I am worried it is damaging the starter motor, and I may get stranded if it fails.
It used to happen once a week, now it is once a day, normally first thing.
My guess is that it is a sticking solenoid or maybe a broken spring.
Is it likely I will be able to fix it if I take the starter out - it looks a bit of a bugger to do so according to the workshop manual?
