I think the problem is just that. But 3mph is a SLOW walking pace. I mean SLOW. I take groups of unfit teenagers with backpacks full of tins of beans and camping kit, who haven't so much as walked to the chippy in 2 years (you think im joking) and they easily average 5mph for 7-8 miles a day, sometimes faster.

Naismith's rule is notoriously optimistic, and that says 3mph on the flat.
Are your kids really only walking for 1.5 hours to do 7-8 miles?
cheers, clive

No, because they stop and chat and eat lunch and take breaks and get a bit lost, which drags the overall average wayyyyy down, but in between on teh stints where they are actually walking from point A to point B they notch up 5. OK, well actually I've just checked my GPS logs and maybe thats a tad hopeful, 4ish, pushing 5 at times when they see the end in sight. I and 4 friends used to walk 1.7 miles to (and from) school when i was a kid in anything between 15 and 20 mins, every day. Naismiths 5km/h is only really true when offroad in hilly land and then i find theres little need for his adjustments for hills. I always plan them, often the groups come in early but more often late due to gabbing or getting waylaid lol.

You sure you're not getting mixed up with kilometres/hour?
I've done a *lot* of walking, and 3 mph on the flat is a reasonably decent speed. If you are walking for more than two hours, with any significant gradient, you won't even average that.
The world record for race walkers over 20 kilometers works out at less than
10 mph; most people only jog at around 7 mph.

See my response to Clive for a more accurate assessment, but in short
- 3mph is SLOW over short distances such as 1 mile, by anyones standard surely? I'm going to have to don the GPS and go walking for a while now, it seems im going mad if everyone else thinks im wrong lol.

I can walk one mile in 15 minutes, but I wouldn't do the second one in that time!

I know what you're saying, it sounds slow. But in all honesty it's a good steady pace, not just a stroll (1-2mph). I do a lot of mountain biking and strolling around the hills at the back of my house, so I have a reasonable idea of distance. I've now just take it as a given that if I've walked for 1 hour I've covered 3 miles.
We have a chap at work who is adamant that he can easily walk continuously for 6-8mph average speed, while wearing 5-15kg of camera equipment (I might have got the weight wrong, but it's no small amount). I'm certainly at a jog by 8mph on a treadmill.
I was reading in this months Camping mag about a walk in North Wales. I think it's about 400 miles long (could be wrong, can't be arsed digging the mag out). It's a 17 day walk at 24 miles a day (christ, why would you want to eh?). Apparently some people do it in just 10! That's 40 miles a day walking. I guess some people just have a well developed stride length.
Anyway as much as I enjoy walking (even to the local shops) and cycling. I can't begrudge somebody who want to drive a mile, because at the end of the day it saves 20-40 minutes.

Tim

Er, where on earth do you think you'll get 20 calls a day? I'm ex wholetime Fire and if a station needed crews called in that often it'll be fully crewed. Just curious, like.

Didn't say was going to get 20 calls a day. I said I could make up to 20 journeys. I too am full time and also retained, I also have another job, but being (usually) the only driver on during the day, need to be down the station, as you know within about 4 minutes of whatever I am doing. Carrying around 50kg on the bike is not a possibility.

Not sure I'd want to walk more than 10 miles a day for fun really!
Oh no, i dont begrudge them it, but if they dont want to damage the car during a bed in (theres some show to prove that ragging it during the bed-in works better anyway) and only walk

Certainly bad for fuel consumption if it's a petrol variant - along with the starter motor - clutch wear et.al. AND bad for global warming (if it really is happening that is - which personally I doubt considering the weather patterns over a few million years or so)!
Yep and this is from one of those "old fogeys" who cut his teeth on the old E93A Ford Popular of 1956-58 vintage!
Reply as you wish as I going on my hols tomorrow so I will be unable to see any replies - bad or otherwise - for at least two weeks :-)

Well, it was an assumption from the words you posted. As you're WT you'll know that a lot of new retained expect armageddon each day! They soon get dissapointed. :)
I was also wondering why you carried your kit in the car. Obviously, wt in station a and ret at station b.
I've always had a motorbike myself. Putting my firekit in a kitbag and bungeeing it onto the back is easy, but a bit too time consuming for retained calls. You could always just keep it on!
As I said, I'm retired now. Did 25 years and decided to call it quits. What a breath of fresh air the real world is! :) keep safe.

Do you have access to power at some sites? Get an electric buggy each.
If it gets driven a decent distance in morning before doing these short trips then it will stay warm enough to be OK. With current weather in afternoon my car will switch to closed loop in 100m at
30mph after being parked all day - 8 hours. In morning after about
12hours parked and with a cooler night it takes about 2 miles.

Yes, but half of that fun is watching the dissapointment grow with them. Hearing the bleeper go off and watching them come down to expect the town is on fire only to find out it's an AFA. Great!
Yes and No. My fault, maybe not clear enough. I do a lot of CFS (Smoke alarms, booklets, paperwork), but also have a small computer business. Hence not being able to carry around computers on a bike + kit.
Now there's a thought. Would look a bit sad though
What made you quit?. Admittedly in the 10 years I have been in it has turned from a great job to a admin full crock of s*it.

Sounds great, but this new car has skint me out. What sort of price would i be looking at?
