Strut

Having a bit of trouble changing the top mounts and bear on a mk4 golf. I am basically trying to change the top mount and bearing. I stupidly undid the 3 ball joint bolts to try and get some angle to remove the strut from the hub/strut housing. Managed to get it in ok and realised that the thread to attach the first nut had sunk with the strut dropping naturally down. Whats the best way to get the strut back up in to the turret to bolt it back up ?

A local garage quote £180 to change the top mount/bearing, wishbone, track rod and ends and drop links, and springs with tracking. Out of interest is that a good price ? to add thats for both sides. Seems a small price to place for pissing around any further.

It all went wrong with the strut firstly trying to change the top mount and bearing in the wheel arch, bugger all room. I really should have taken the strut out. Its so awkward with the spring compressors in such a small space.

I may be forced to undo the hub nut and do it like that.

If it was just the bush I could have gotten away with doing it in the arch but the bearing ment I had to undo the second nut holding the spring plate on.

Out of interest whats the best way to do this job if I ever do it again ?
