Trolley jack safety valve

Hi...



I have a Halfords 2 tonne hydraulic trolley jack. It's the older version of this one:

I've had it about 6 years, and although it's only seen light use i thought it would be a good idea to check the hydraulic oil level. So, after a quick re-read of the instructions, off i set to remove the filler plug. Like a complete muppet though, i actually removed the safety valve instead, which the instructions go to great pains to say do not adjust. Not only did i adjust it, i removed it :(



I've re-fitted it, and it's in approximately the same position it was before i messed with it, but is this good enough? Is there any way to check, or should i just err on the side of caution and buy another jack?

if it works then use it, you never get under a vehicle with only the jack, do you?

Unless you're going to jack up a vehicle weighing well over 2 tonnes it's irrelevant. Obviously you're not going to use the jack without axle stands anyway.

I'd never get under any vehicle without an axle stand(s) being in place.

I was thinking the same. If I had a trolley jack that went, what would I be risking?

*Maybe* a broken arm if I happened to be reaching under at the wrong angle at the wrong time, but basically I'd always have axle stands or ramps if I was putting anything vital under it.

It works fine without a load (no surprise really!), but i've yet to try it with a load since i removed the valve. I guess i'll try it at arm's length and see what happens! The heaviest thing i lift with it is a Nissan Bluebird, so well under the 2 tonne rating of the jack.

Certainly not! Axle stands usually, or ramps depending on the car (bumper clearance etc).

I suppose anything is possible, but not with decent quality ones.
