BTW what's up with the bottle jack? If you're worried about safety and your bottle jack doesn't have a curved top on it to fit under the axle, then it's the wrong bottle jack. A bottle jack with a u-shaped holder on the top and a bevelled base is just the job. The one I have was made by Weber, their website's a bit s*it but is as follows;

I finished up buying a 2 tonne Epco jack in the end, after getting through quite a few lighter, cheaper ones. The Epco one has served me well, lasted about 35 years so far without service other than topping up the oil once, & oiling the wheel bearings once every 5 years or so. Should last me out, I think :)

With a Land Rover you want one with a good maximum lift. Many trolly jacks, designed for use on lesser vechicles, have low minimums and limited maximums. Also consider the weight that it needs to lift, small ones might be starting to reach their capacity under a Land Rover...

I use a Clarke Strongarm CTJ2L 2-Tonne Long in the workshop not too heavy although the carry handle is pure crap and guaranteed to drop the jack on your leg if abused.They also sell one in a case probably not a bad idea CTJ2M 2-Tonne. In the car is a 4 tonne truck bottle jack which I reckon is plenty and with a wider base more stable than std issue. Derek

I've had one of those for about 6 years now. It was fine at first but now It's now not all that good, after several years of use it has become a little 'double jointed' and if I try to lift the front of my disco with it to full height the thing starts to twist. Like most of the Clarke/MM stuff it's a little too lightly made for arduous work and struggles if you use it at its full capacity, TBO 1.5 tons would be a better rating for it.

Bought a lovely Bradbury trolley jack at the auction sale of a Landrover garage that had closed - £60 - lifts the RR high enough off the front axle for the front springs to drop out of the turrets . I think it's rated at 4 tons x 1 m.

My very smug feeling after the auction was disposed of very quickly when I realized that I could not lift it on my own into the RR - solved by friendly passer-by. Felt slightly foolish driving home with the top tailgate open allowing the handle to poke out. Even with the rear seats folded it only just fitted in the RR.

I bought a Clarke 3 ton quick lift from Machine Mart in Jan this year. I use it 2 or 3 times a week but I think a seal has gone somewhere. I can lift my RaRo but it settles back down at about 1mm every 2 mins and the handle gets wedged against the chassis.

it also leaves big dimples in me tarmac drive :)

I use a cheap an' cheerful Halfrauds 2 tonne one.

(I don't use it to lift the whole Rangie, just one wheel at a time..)

wizz it back in pronto they should sort it under warranty probably won't need a reciept thanks to that nifty database they use, mine is 4 years old but I did have to top it up this year. Derek
