Don't worry about it - I'm very, very English (Traced to about 17th century) and I'd have asked you the same question - so its not just foreigners you have to be suspicious of, it's us English as well. (Though lots of my family are from the West Midlands and up North, which is pretty bad as I'm really rather southern!)
your absolutely right, try going into Sainsbury's filling up your shopping trolley then asking for discount at the checkout, what you reckon the response will be ?
no matter who they are , there's too many piss-takers ( customers ) in the motor trade, you can give a quote, guesstimate, what ever you call it, even a quote set in stone and the feckers still moan when they get the bill, you cannot win with the general public !!!!!
Unfortunately I know what you mean and unfortunately it is classed as racism. It either costs my company thousands of pounds, results in criminal acts or in worse case scenarios someone gets seriously injured. Despite the odd being stacked highly against certain groups I can not legally discriminate for any reason.
Despite being unprejudiced I am still labelled a racist and face threats and violence on a weekly basis, sometimes daily despite sticking to the law.
What did you expect?? You're in the Motor Trade son not exactly the most respected of occupations when it's common practise to Rip off the General public.
Also I don't know why everyone is shocked at his apparent racism, as he deserves our pity for being a grease monkey and therefore not the sharpest tool in the box.
True in a sense, but at the end of the day doing any job on a car for £20 is rock bottom money, and it is taking the piss to knock that down. Whilst I don't like mrcheerful's racist attitude, I can certainly understand this aspect. Having said that, I'd say it's often worth upping the price a bit if you get the impression that the person asking is going to haggle over the price, so you end up at the price you'd have originally quoted anyway.
David Taylor ( snipped-for-privacy@yadt.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
That he's a Xenophobe.
A racist discriminates on the grounds of race. Many people of different races carry UK passports. Many people carrying non-UK passports are caucasian.

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. 2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
A Xenophobe dislikes people on the grounds of nationality.

A person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.
Neither are attractive character traits; and both are signs of a very small, very closed mind.
