Vauxhall Cavalier Starting Problems (Revisited)

Aug 19, 2004 4 Replies

I've been having problems with starting my 1995 Cavalier 1.7TD CDX similar to what have been discussed on here before (a quick search on Google will turn up some threads).

The fault is identical to what is described here:

I suspect the solenoid but would like to try the screw down terminals solution first--however I'm a bit lost as to where I should be looking, and am devoid of any kind of manual (Haynes or otherwise) to give me a clue.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The starter on this engine is mounted on the rear, nearest to the chassis bulkhead. It is quite awkward to access from above, as the inlet manifold gets in the way. You can just get to the connection for the starter solenoid from above though. If you find where the oil filter is on the rear side of the engine, then the starter is not too far way. Be careful not to short anything across the starter terminals or to earth while working with your hands back there!!

Thanks for the info,I'll take a look later on. What about the screw down terminals on the coil? Under the dash somehwere I presume?

You have a diesel, the original thread is about petrol cars with an ignition coil.

That would explain why I can't find it, then :)

Cheers guys. I'll get myself down to a breakers' yard and see if I can pick up a solenoid.
