One bucket of soapy water to clean car, one bucket of water to rinse. That is enough to clean a BX estate which is a darn sight bigger than your Fiat.

Same here, I've never needed any more to clean any of the cars I've owned.

I was surprised to actually measure the output of my pressure washer, which quite adequately washes my car in ~3-4 mins (wet, add shampoo, wash off), and uses only a couple of buckets. One advantage to a very cheap pressure washer. (It takes ~100 seconds to fill a bucket) Basically as it's easy to apply a thin film of water, which is quite tricky with a bucket, as it tends to run off more.

I'm pretty sure the Flash car wash kit also minimises water use. I don't seem to have it switched 'on' for very long if I was the car using it.

The figures for rainfall, in gallons, sounded ludicrously high to me - until I converted them to mm of rain per sq metre of land.

If anything, they're low - an _average_ of about 2.5mm of rainfall per day per sq metre of land. OK, so a lot of that water is not going to be collectable and potable - I don't want to be drinking the runoff from the M25, thanks - but even so - we don't need to desalinate.

The water companies need to get their arses in gear and start managing the supplies properly. Until they do, we need to stop wasting water.

Any truth in the rumour on a desalination plant built around the Dartford area and that it's waiting for approval for operation by Ken Livingstone and his cronies?
