Whine when engine is warm and foot not on the accelerator

I have an M reg Toyota Carina E that has developed an intermittent high pitched whine. Often, when the engine is warm, when I take my foot off the accelerator a high pitched whine is heard. As soon as I put my foot back on the accelerator, the whine stops. It's quite irritating, especially in warmer weather when the windows are open.

My garage said that it's the Pas pump and a replacement would cost about £400. Is it likely to be the Pas pump, or could it be something else?

Thanks

Teresa

more likely a belt or an air leak

Thanks for that. What exactly is a pas pump?

It stands for Power Assisted Steering.

It pumps hydraulic fluid round the steering system to aid you turning the wheel. When this stops, the steering goes heavy (as you may notice when you turn the ignition off).

As you can tell, I know very little about cars, so thanks for the info.

Why would the garage say that the pas pump is causing the whine, as the whine only occurs when I take my foot off the accelerator and is nothing to do with the position or turning of my steering wheel?

pas pump is usually driven off the engine, so noises produced by it can vary with engine speed....

but some cars can have electric pas pumps.

I don't think Toyota use electric pumps though.

Only cars I can think of with electric PAS are the MGF, Punto Mk2, and some of the very new lil' biddy chariots.

Corsas have had for ages, I think. And probably by extension, many other GM products.

It could be the pas pump. When my car was idling and whining, I could make the whining stop by turning the steering wheel.

I'm going to wait and see how it goes. I don't want to pay out £400 for a new pump unless I have to.
