'93 Miata heater control - repair or replace

Hi all.

Last fall I posted that my heater/air flow/vent controls were not working correctly. Well, I took the console apart today and took out the heater control. I found that a cable guide for the air flow (?) (vent/defrost/etc) control was broken off.

Picture of heater control with broken piece where it should be. The broken piece is the cable guide at the center of the picture for the cable going off to the right:

So, my options seem to be to either replace the heater control or attempt to repair it. If this was easier to get to, I'd consider trying super glue. I don't know if that is a reasonable thing to do for this piece.

Useful suggestions welcomed :-)

Jim

Sorry about that, don't know why that signature was selected.

Replace only, do NOT attempt repair for reasons you state above, it's too hard to do it over if the repair fails.

Check Ebay, junk yards, etc.

i can also vouch for pat as a excellent source for parts, and a all around good guy, but you could also try contacting

Thanks Chris, I will around tomorrow. I have one on a Miata that will work for Jim, but getting it out might take me a few days.

I will look in the parts buckets tomorrow, need to clear that stuff out.

Does anyone happen to know if the heater/air conditioner control box from a 1996 model will fit a 1993 model.

Jim, definitely check the sources that Chris listed.

The one that will probably work for you is from a 1991 model and it needs to be removed, which could be next week with my schedule. Since it is older than your's, it could easily develop the same problem, though it could also work for years to come.

Have you priced a new one? (shudder)

I haven't. I have a query in to Planet Miata but haven't heard anything. Last time I checked with a dealer about parts, it was hit or miss if they were available for a 93.

Same as any dealer part:

  1. open trunk
  2. stuff full of bills
  3. head to dealer, you may have enough if you packed the trunk tightly enough.

I don't even know which of these is the part:

"Dash control unit, miata mx5, w/o detachable top" or "Dash control unit, miata mx5, w/detachable top"

Detachable top on the hvac controls?

Also, with this warning on the page, I'm not sure those are current prices:

"Due to a pricing increase on July 1st 2006 some prices may be incorrect."

I've sent a query to finishlineperformance.com.

The weather here is so nice, I'm tempted to try the superglue and re-assemble everything. At least I could drive the car until I get my hands on a replacement part to install.

So, just to update this. Just for fun, I tried the super glue, it didn't work. When I took the screw out of the broken off piece, the plastic fell apart into small pieces.

This evening I installed a replacement that I obtained from Planet Miata. It cost $15 for the part and about $11 for shipping. I called them Tuesday morning and the part came today.

I also checked with

a new replacement would be $169.95, but is available. They said it would take them a couple of days to get it.

Thanks for all the input.

You got a great price, and from personal experience, the shipping was very reasonable too. (light weight part, awkward shape with the cables)

Please let us know if the part is in good shape, so far I have only heard good things about planetmiata.com.

It appeared to be in good shape. Everything worked the way it should. It is installed now and I just replaced the original door speakers. Now if only the weather would cooperate.
