I took my 1990 Miata to a reputable mechanic, and he couldn't find anything wrong with the clutch. He charged me $110 to flush out the clutch hydraulics, but it drives the same. He drove it 30 or 40 miles and said I should just live with it.

Hmm, not something I would expect to hear from a "reputable" mechanic.
I'd suggest another mechanic. If possible, find a local Miata club and ask around. The clutch in my '90 (with over 100,000 miles on her) still works smoothly. Matter of fact, it works better than I do some mornings!
Another idea might be to replace the transmission fluid with synthetic - that's known to smooth things out as well. Also check the level of oil in the shifter turret - if it's dry it could add to the problem of "sticky" shifting.
