drive shaft won't go in

I am trying to insert a rebuilt left hand side drive axle into the transmission but its stuck out about 1 1/2 inches and won't go in. Any suggestions? Its supposed to just click in.

I'm going to assume that you have a Miata since you posted on the Miata group AND NEGLECTED TO MENTION WHAT KIND OF CAR YOU HAVE.

On a late model Miata the manual says you have to "push" the axle into the differential. Superman couldn't "push" the axle in. You have to do the following:

Lightly grease the axle splines and the clip.

Push the axle in as far as you can get it to go. Be sure to take up all the play in the CVs. As you have noted this will be a bit too far out.

Give the outboard end of the axle a good whack with a large **RUBBER** mallet. This will seat the clip.
