gearbox?

Oct 04, 2003 1 Replies

I just bought a '99 miata and after two weeks I've noticed that 1st gear looses power after 4000 rpms, it feels like the engine is rev'ing up but it's not pushing anything. It didn't do this a week ago.

Are my gears bad? and if so what do I do about it? (Replace the gearbox? Is it a clutch thing?)

My money is tight, so if I can do this myself that would be great.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a problem with the clutch, except that the same problem should occur in the other gears as well. In fact, it should be worse in the higher gears. You can test this by lightly holding in the brake to hold the car at constant speed while pushing the accelerator. If the tach increases (i.e., the engine revs) while the car is at constant speed, you need a new clutch.
