Q: Squeaky Sound while Driving

Hello everyone,

I have a '99 Miata, which is running quite well. The one thing that really bothers me is that when I'm driving, I hear *very* faint squeaky sound. It sounds like a rusty spring in an old mattress, and (I think) it's coming from the rear wheel of the passenger side.

I probably wouldn't even notice it if I turn on the radio, but since I tend to turn off the radio/CD player while driving, I'm forced to hear this annoying noise. I went to a couple of mechanics, but they all said there was nothing wrong with the car.

The noise is not constant; sometimes it's quite audible, but other times, it's complete gone. Also I can only hear when the car is moving and the top is up, because when the top is down, the noise is buried in the wind.

Can anyone suggest where/what to look for? __ sol

Hmm, this sounds suspiciously like what I experienced some time back. In my case, I would hear a squeaky sound from the front passenger side wheel. Driving close to a wall, brush on the side of the street, etc. would amplify it. I found this quite scary. I went to the shop several times before they found it: apparently, the brake line is secured with a clip, and that clip was missing (or so they told me.) They had neglected to put the clip back on after replacing the brake pads.
