Radio antenna

The electric antenna on my '99 just stopped working- just emits a grinding noise and doesn't move the mast either direction, and the mast can be pulled in and out freely by hand.

How much am I likely to spend on getting this fixed? Is it potentially a do-it-yourself project?

Anyone have experience in just pulling the whole thing and installing a generic whip antenna?

Thank you in advance.

I pulled the whole thing in my 2001 and put in an 18" rubber antenna. My power one was working fine but I liked the look of the shorter antenna better.

With mine it was easy. Take out the little bin, pull the left trim panel, undo a couple of bolts and out it came.

Odds are your "gear cable" (for lack of a better term) that's attached to the antenna mast has snapped in the middle somewhere....very simple to replace...antenna mast is about 30.00, maybe cheaper. very simple install. I believe there's something on Miata.net in the garage section about how to do it? Leon knows....He'll probably reply.

Gee, everyone needs me, even when I am gone? There is indeed something on miata.net. If that does not work, since part of the old antenna is in the motor, you can fairly easily take the motor out and apart, but this is where it stops being very simple, since you will almost certainly forget that a part fell out of the motor and on the floor, and reassemble the motor without it. After that, you will spend hours trying to get the antenna back in and buy a new motor from Mazda before finding the missing part on the floor.
