...i stor and get gas...this light comes on, and then the car will not shift out of first gear? C'mon...it has to be a sensor right?
Any clues?

The computer has put the transmission in "limp home" mode.
Since the only action on the car was filling gas, silly as it may sound
- check that the gas cap is tight.
After that, it's dealer time.
Your evaporative system is telling you the gas cap is not tightened.
