Ignition safety lock - '83 W126

Oct 18, 2004 2 Replies

The engine of a '83 W126 can be started with transmission lever not only in P but in any position (e. g. D or R).

May be someone could explain briefly how the ignition safety lock works, and where or what could be the problem in my case.

Thanks in advance. Dimi

Perhaps the level of the safety switch has broken off in the position that allows you to crank your engine regardless of any gear. It is located on the tranny... just look for the linkage and you will see that black plastic level that is supposed to travel with the metal shift linkage.
