Fitting a 12V stereo to a 6V system

Hello all,

i have just bought an MGB GT and it has the original 2 x 6Volt battery system. How am I going to install a regular 12V stereo into this car?

Surely MG didn't isolate themselves from the car stereo market, or did they?

Did they produce a converter of some description?

If you can give me some insight as to how I can get a radio/cassette running right I would be grateful.

It is a 12V system, the batteries are wired in series,

2 x 6V = 12V

What you will have to watch out for is that early cars have a positive earth electrical system that will may not be compatible with a modern negative earth stereo.

Thanks Ian,

ok, so is there a way of changing either my car to negative earth or changing the polarity of the stereo?

The 1967s were positive earth (a 67 BGT was my first car), and there are instructions for "flashing" them over to negative earth online.

Here's one set of instructions:

Be sure it hasn't been done already, though.

Hi Jim

If you have a generator, the polarity can be changed, it will also require changes to the petrol pump and ignition primary circuit.

register (free) and search the archives nder the MGB and Midget/Sprite lists. ( I am almost certain that the topic has been covered before).

If you have an alternator, it will be a negative earth system already.

Some stereos may be able to be converted ( may have a switch in the back or similar) or a negative earth one can be mounted in a positive earth car but you need to ensure that all components are isolated (including the body of the stereo and aerial earth) from the chassis of the car.

Turns out my car has been converted to negative earth already. I was a bit confused because the previous owner had told me it was positive, i presume it had been done before he had owned it and had never looked!

Anyway, I put in a 60s Motorola at the weekend, works a treat.

thanks all anyway.

regards, Jim
