Midget hubs

My 1970 Midget (1275 Rostyle wheels) was Mot'd this week. I hit surprising difficulties with the hubs. Basically a hub had worn allowing unacceptable movement of the bearings. The one the otherside is on its way out as well. A hub acquired second-hand from one local classic car specialist was if anything worse than mine and another specialist ended up emptying his stock finding all bar one similarly too worn to use (and this has been ruled by my Mot tester only just acceptable).

The second specialist said hubs are becoming an increasing problem. Apparently they can source reconditioned hubs but these cost an eye watering £137 each and take 6 weeks to obtain - presumably because they are produced by sleeving. As it is pretty well certain I will need new hubs both sides at next years MOT I am looking at quite a lot of expense.

I intend to trawl local engineering shops with the two spare worn hubs I now have to see if I can get a cheaper resleeving job done in the meantime. Before doing so Ithought I would check to see if anyone knows of a source of reasonably priced new hubs. Alternatively if the problem is growing perhaps there is an engineering company out there who might see an opportunity and start producing some - after all there are an awful lot of midgets around!

Front hubs presumably as the spridgets have Solid half shafts like the Minor etc from memory.

It's a basic engineering job to bore out the bearing recesses and either resleeve or go to the next size bearing up on the OD (outside diameter)

If the bearings are imperial sizes then you're a bit restricted by availability, but still worth looking into, after all you still have to buy new bearings in any event.

I've got a older (1975) Skefco catalogue on my desk from something else I've just done, so can look up dimensions for you if you cannot access any data yourself.

As a temporary (maybe permanant) measure pull the bearings out, clean everything and use a bearing retaining Loctite with the spray cleaner??? and refit. Does work for ages I have never had it fail. This will be no worse that having the car running as it is now but will tighten up the bearings.

The Loctite will take up a big gap.
