On the pre 1974 MGBs there were two 6v batteries. I understand you can

Be careful running batteries in parallel. They can discharge through each other.

Good point John,

I've just found that Moss do heavy duty 6v ones for about £45 collected, so I think I'll stay with 2 x 6v. I might get a couple of battery boxes while I'm at it as well.
