If it's what i think it is, it may be the fact that your starter motor is full of crap... (it clicks like a bugger when you try and turn it over)

Take off your starter motor and clean it out, using something like a paintbrush. (make sure you DO NOT use anything that will attract dust/swarf i.e.solvents e.t.c.)

I turn it on it makes a noise but wont fire up until i push ans rock it back and forth but will tell the garage tomorrow to look at starting motor , many thanks will let you know the outcome the age of car is 10 years

A 10 year old cooper S???? i dont think so. anyway, mick rouse is correct, its crap in the starter. clean it out as suggested, if that doesnt work it may even be a sign the solenoid is packing up. If the car is only 10 years old, then the solenoid is attached withthe starter, just replace the lot for £20-30 recon. motor.

It could be a cooper garages conversion with a retro fit distributor & points ;-)

they were made till 2000 I think. I did have a look at buying one new, round fronted, in 1997, cost 10000 UKP at the time.

Seriously if its 12 years old with points like you said you have had replaced there is a seroius problem, a 1994 car would not have points, trust me I know, also unless its been a cooper garages conversion its not a S either,

Yes my 1990 mainstream Rover Mini Cooper 1.3 with a carb, has electronic ignition. All I have to do is replace the dizzy cover and rotor arm, oh and HT leads too when necessary, but there's definitely no points mate.
