07 Spyder brake problem

Has anyone heard of brakes squealing in the 2007 Spyder? I just bought the car in March and I'd say in June the brakes started squealing. At first it was intermittent but now it's just about everytime I apply medium pressure to the pedal as I slow down to a red light or stop sign.

The dealer looked at it already and didn't find anything wrong, couldn't replicate the problem, and just cleaned the brakes. I heard the brakes squeal again just as I went back home that same day. The sound is similar to the brakes squealing when they need changed around 60-70k miles but I only have 5k miles.

thanks Brandon

I'm a Brit Misubishi Carisma owner = boring but the car is for my Wife !

There are two possible causes

a) Brake disc (rotor) squeal is caused by the brake pad/shim/caliper system causing a `bell mode' vibration of the rotor. I did find some articles on the web, but cannot point you to them.

b) with worn out pads, they often have a `squealer' - a bit of metal that contacts the disc when the pad is worn out. This is more likely at high mileage - eg 40 t0 60,000 miles.

If you have a) Delphi do `rubber' stick on shims, but I have never used them. Otherwise change to a premium brake pad, as there seem to be many brake pad formulations. (eg GM in the UK do an OEM, and an `aftermarket' spec pad - the OEM being 3x the price !

Considering I know b) isn't my problem I'd guess that a) is my problem between the 2 of them. I spoke with the local assistant service manager over the weekend and he said that I was the 7th person last week to bring my vehicle in complaining of brake squeal. He said its happening across all Mitsubishi models and basically all model years. Mitsubishi doesn't consider it a problem and therefore any repairs at this point aren't covered under warranty. They did put something on my brakes to suppress the squealing but he said it would only last a month. Well, on the way home they squealed so it lasted about 5 minutes.

He is going to be discussing the issue with the service manager to determine how to help the customers whom Mitsubishi is not helping up to this point.

Hmmm ....

My Son and I have just fitted Delphi discs and pads all round on his 145 bhp Rover 200 `hot hatch' .... no problems with squeal there.

Our 1996 Mitsu Carisma has never had a problem, either on OEM or APEC brand front pads.

I wonder if they have recently changed the disc (rotor) metallurgy ?

Me - I'd try some quality aftermarket pads - and backcharge Mitsu if they cure the problem.

I contacted the service manager a couple days ago and got word back yesterday that Mitsubishi has finally decided to replace brakes for people who have problems with the squealing. The service manager at the local dealer stated they would need to order them and then I can come to have them put on. Only the front ones need replaced from what she said and it will be covered under warranty.

Good luck - it took me 9 months to sort out a fuel tank warranty problem (broken cap ring + expanded plastic tank) with Mitsubishi .... !
