90 Eclipse Not Firing up... No Electric to Plug

Aug 15, 2005 8 Replies

Okay, My 90 Eclipse was doing fine all day today until about an hour ago, I was driving it home and less then 200 feet from my house it just died when I turned the corner to go home, I don't know why it died and I was hoping someone could help me by telling me what could be wrong...

Okay, I pulled one of the plug's out after I pushed it the rest of the way home and had my mom try and start it, I touched the metal part while she was trying to start it, No Electricity was there....

Also, It just sounds like its not getting anything at all but it cranks over, just wont start at all.... Could it be a distibutor cap or something? someone please help me, I need to fix this car A.S.A.P!!!!

Thanks!!!

I wouldn't recommend toaching the wires to check for spark. That's about 20K volts and you will dance for it. As for your problem, pull the timing cover and look for a broken belt. If that's fine, check the cam angle sensor.

Several issues to check. You'll need a multimeter

a) When you turn the IGN on, the Check Engine Light (CEL) should turn on for about 5 sec then turn off. If it does not come on at all, the ECU is not getting power. Look in the engine bay, for the main junction box. You may simply have blown a fuse. IF so, other circuits probably don't work either.

With the IGN on b) pull the connector on the air cleaner. One of the pins should have +5V on it (If you can tell, one of the thicker wires is either red or black w/ white stripe). This is the regulated +5v from the ECU.

If no +5V, your MPI relay, behind the radio, may have failed. Its not uncommon. The MPI relay provides +12v to the ECU, the fuel pump, and the rest of the engine sensors and the spark coils.

Check the above and get back to the NG for further advice.

Assuming you have a DOHC, its the round can on the transmission end of the intake cam. It the approximate equivalent to the old distributor. As previously suggested, pull the front cover of the cam belt, and make sure its not broken. If it is ... you also probably bent some of all of the inlet valves.

Okay, we checked the timing belt, it even looks new, nothing wrong with the belt... sooo i guess we will check the Cam agle sensor next

Okay, just wondering could there be any fuses that went out? if so if you could find out, which one? thanks

Actually, no. The main fusible link (a fuse, in the main terminal box in the engine bay) supplied power to the MPI relay. Pull the cover and check all the links.

Check that you are getting power to the ECU and that the ECU is providing power to the CAS and all the others. Looking at my 91 manual, my previous info was wrong. Tthe CAS is powered by +12V. If you have a 4 pin connector, power is supplied on #3. The air cleaner (MAS) connector is 6 pin.

1 2 3 4 5 6

pin #2 is the +12V power supply, and is same supply to the CAS, from the MPI relay. Its the engine coolant sensor under the coolant filler cap, green-black wire, that should have +5V.

Stew is pointing you to the only real "fuse" that could go out. The MPI relay is the main fuse driving gas and spark.
